1. The Three Robes (Ti-cīvara)

These make up the essential clothing for a monastic:

• (1) Inner Robe (Antaravāsaka): Worn as an undergarment, covering from the waist down.

• (2) Outer Robe (Uttarāsaṅga): The single-layer robe draped over the body, often leaving one shoulder bare.

• (3) Thick Double Robe (Saṅghāṭi): A heavy, double-layered robe used for warmth, especially in colder weather. It can also be folded and used as a mat.

2. Other Essential Items

These support the monk’s daily life and adherence to the monastic rules (Vinaya):

• (4) Alms Bowl (Patta or Piṇḍapāta-pātra): Used to collect food from the lay community during the daily alms round, symbolizing reliance on the generosity of others.

• (5) Razor (Vāsi): For shaving the head and face, a practice that symbolizes renunciation, detachment from vanity, and acceptance of the simple life.

• (6) Needle and Thread (Sūci): For sewing and repairing robes, emphasizing self-sufficiency and the mindful maintenance of possessions.

• (7) Belt/Girdle (Kāyabandhana): A cloth belt used to secure the robes around the waist.

• (8) Water Strainer (Parissāvana or Filter Cloth): Used to filter water to avoid accidentally consuming and thus harming small insects or creatures (a practice of non-harm, ahimsa).
